The Nerve That Carries the News

A stiff neck, a Tuesday headache, and the nerve that reports upward before the mind decides what to call it.

“I've had a stiff neck for years,” Izzie said, pressing two fingers behind her ear and drawing them down her neck. “I assumed it was the desk.”

The desk contributed. So did her posture, her rounded shoulders, her head leaning forward. But the desk was not where it started.

Behind that muscle, the sternocleidomastoid, runs the vagus nerve. Wanderer, in Latin. It travels from the brainstem down through the neck, behind the clavicle, through the chest, past the heart and lungs, down to the stomach, liver, pancreas, and gut. Most people assume the brain is a commander, issuing orders the body follows. It is mostly a receiver. Roughly eighty to ninety per cent of vagus fibres carry signals upward, from the gut and heart to the brainstem, day and night. The brain receives these messages and produces a feeling. What you think and feel is partly a report from the body first.

Izzie's headaches always started on Tuesday mornings, nausea arriving before the pain. Her gut had been signalling the problem hours before her head caught up. When the neck muscle stays strained, a clenched jaw, unspoken words held in the throat, a head turned toward a screen for years, it presses on the sheath where the vagus runs. The brain receives a steady tension signal with no clear cause and often reaches for the nearest available word: anxiety, low mood, unease. The word gets treated. The neck stays tight.

This is not only a physical story. There is a fourth nervous system response beyond fight, flight, and freeze, named by Pete Walker: fawn. The body that neither runs nor collapses, but smiles instead, softens its voice, and learns early to read the room before it has words for what it's reading. The warmth this produces is real. So is the cost. Genuine warmth moves freely from fullness. The warmth a fawn response produces comes from the memory of a room where wanting was not safe, given from that memory every single day since childhood.

Many women recognise its shape the moment they hear the word. They have been living inside it for years without a name for it.

The gut, meanwhile, runs its own government. Five hundred million neurons woven through its wall, its own reflexes and memory, managing digestion long before the vagus nerve existed and continuing to do so now. Ninety per cent of the body's serotonin is made there, not in the brain. Half its dopamine. The woman who has been told her anxiety is in her head has often been looking in the wrong organ.


By the time the brain has named her feelings, the gut has already been experiencing them.
